‘Selfie’ was named the word of the year in 2013. Almost everyone who uses social media has posted a selfie at one time or another. The art of the perfect selfie conjures up so many different opinions and viewpoints. More than ever before it seems that people are taking advantage of their own images through selfies posted on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and other forms of social media. But are selfies doing more harm than good? Or are they actually a way to create your own image?
This year Dove debuts a documentary short film at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival called Selfie. The film explores the lives of young girls and their mothers as they discuss beauty and selfies. They talk candidly about how they view themselves and learn how they can use a selfie to redefine their perceptions of their own beauty. It brings attention to the idea of how social media can define who we are and allows them to explore what they don’t like about themselves and use it to redefine who they are and realize that what may seem like a flaw to them is actually a part of their true beauty.
