Jennifer Lawrence graces the cover of Harper’s Bazaar UK November 2013 issue.

Jennifer Lawrence recently told Harper’s Bazaar UK that she was asked to lose weight in the early days of her career.  The 23-year-old actress is best known for her role in the blockbuster film Hunger Games.  Appearing on the November 2013 cover of Harper’s Bazaar UK she told the publication in her own words what she experienced.  Lawrence admits that she still feels hurt even today by the words that were spoken to her regarding her body.

“I was young. It was just the kind of s–t actresses have to go through….Somebody told me I was fat, that I was going to get fired if I don’t lose a certain amount of weight.  They brought in pictures of me where I was basically naked and told me to use them as motivation for my diet.  It was just that,” she said.

It’s hard to believe that a woman with her body was being told to lose weight.  At just over 5’7″ tall her figure is one that many women envy with her womanly curves and taller than average stature.  This is another reminder of how the entertainment business is constantly scrutinizing the bodies of women.  This isn’t a new story.  We’ve heard these kinds of tales from fashion models and other actresses.

It’s about time we collectively started to embrace ourselves as we are.  It seems that Lawrence is doing just that.  she recognizes that even though she is successful now and envied by others, the reality of the business is still there.

“It doesn’t matter what accolades you get.  I know it’ll never happen to me again.  If anybody even tries to whisper the word ‘diet’, ‘I’m like. You can go f–k yourself,” Lawrence said.

We can all learn from some of the experiences that women like Lawrence go through.  Her success has not made her immune to this type of thing. We live in an image conscious world and have to learn how to make the most of who we are no matter what our shape or size.  The first step is embracing each individual as uniquely beautiful in her own way.  Once we can recognize that, there will be room for all different types of bodies in Hollywood and beyond.

And by the way, in my opinion, Jennifer Lawrence has NEVER been fat.  #justsaying

  1. I really dislike how women are expected to be thin to the bones due to the social media today. its not healthy in any way and just leads to being ill and constantly scrutinizing your self image
