Travelling around speaking to students about issues of body image and self-esteem can really be an experience of learning and growth. It’s also an opportunity to see if the young women are even open to listening and learning.
They are truly learning so much. We tackle issues of body image, self-esteem and career goals. This week I visited schools where issues of body image and bullying between girls is prevalent. It was an honor to see the way the ladies took in the information. The message of embracing your own beauty and embracing who you are is a strong one that they all seem to take from the presentation.
The importance of finding one part of your body that you may have struggled with and are learning to love is one of the challenges. The other option is simply focusing on something about yourself that you already love and embrace it to the fullest. One young lady said, “She loves her bum.” Another said, “She loves that she is strong.” One young lady said, “I love how flexible I am.” I’ve had a few young women talk about how much they love their eyes, hair and smile and even one who said she thought her eyes looked like a vampire. There has been such an interesting range of things the girls choose to love about themselves.
At the end of the day the key message about embracing your own beauty is powerful not only for young girls but also for women in general. We are all beautiful in our own way and the first step is learning to embrace that.
