The Truth About Beauty

Beauty.  What is it?  Well, according to it is “the quality present in a thing or person that gives intense pleasure or deep satisfaction to the mind; arising from sensory manifestations.”

One key thing about the description i notice stands out is; ‘that gives intense pleasure or deep satisfaction to the mind.”  That being said, each person has a different mind thus, should make beauty different for most people.  But as a whole, societies have set a specific standard or ideal of what they feel is beauty.

I have just returned to North America after seven months in Ghana, West Africa.  When you leave your own reality and are immersed in someone else’s you are forced to see the differnces and learn what people see as beautiful.  Or what they don’t.

In Ghana one of the biggest selling beauty products is skin bleaching creams and fake hair.  Almost all women are wearing weaves, wigs or braided extensions.  I found myself wearing braided extensions while I was there more about the ease of maintenance than anything.

But the concept of having lighter skin comes from a really backward way of thinking.  There are men who will only date a woman who has lighter skin.  The result is women go to great lengths to bleach their skin so they can have a boyfriend or find a potential husband.  I think it’s very sad.  That’s not necessarily the case with everyone but, it is a common thought process.

This isn’t the only country this happens in either.  I have heard stories about Indian, Filipinos and Latin Americans with this same view of dark vs. light skin.

The truth about beauty?  I thinki it is really about the mind.  It’s in the mind and eye of the beholder as they say.  Each person will have their view.   I say this because we are all individuals.  We have all met people who we didnt’ necessarily find attractive but, someone else thought the world of their looks.

We all have our own view.

But one thing  I know for sure is that what’s inside the heart, spirit and mind will always radiate through to the outside.  What’s inside brings about a glow that surpasses all standards of beauty.  Your spirit can supersede everything.

What do you think?
